Here is a great story of how doing the right things can keep you alive, even in extreme conditions. It's wonderful that this family is alive and well when it could have turned out so differently. Good clear thinking on the part of the father kept this family alive.
Welcome!
Hi and thanks for visiting my blog. I thought that it would be fun to start an open forum of survival topics and outdoor skills that others can refer to for information and instruction. I will post a survival topic or skill and give some information on it. I will also be posting excerpts from my survival manual that I have been writing. Feel free to comment on it, or ask about a topic that I have not yet covered. Even professionals can learn a new way to do something. In this way we can all help each other. If you have a specific experience that you would like to share please feel free to do so at your own risk of others' comments. If you disagree with someone please be civil and respectful. One last thing, please keep it "G" rated i.e., no foul language or inappropriate subjects. If you break the rules I will pull your post. So let's keep it clean and have some fun!

When: 1 November 2013

We have a conflict of interest this month so I will have to move the Club meeting to the 1 of November. This month we will meet at the Pioneer village down in north park in Provo. We will be talking about Flint Knapping and we will have a demonstration. The village is on the north west side of the park. You can park on 500 West.
We will not be able to cook any meals so bring something that you can eat on the fly or fill free to stop and try one of our many establishments here in the Valley on your way to the meeting. (you are welcome to bring it with you to the meeting as well)
We will also be providing a service project for our use of the village (picking up trash and bringing down a canopy for the winter).

June Club Meeting the 28th
We had a great turnout yesterday for the club meeting. In fact we had so much to do that we could not get it all done. So next month we are going to finish up our map reading, and learn how to plot our position on a map, and then how to plot an 8-digit grid coordinate, and then how to use the terrain to help us get there the fastest.
Our next club meeting will be on the 28th of June from 1800 to 2100 at Glen Canyon Park. The focus will be orienteering. Remember to bring your foil dinner, your knife, a water bottle, good hiking shoes, your folder with your map (if you got one at last night's meeting), a mechanical pencil, a light jacket, and a friend.
I also updated our website to include an Orienteering section in the store. You can find the protractors there along with some really good compasses. the website is www.wildjakes.com or you can go to Ranger Joe's and look for them there.

The topic for this month will be Land Navigation, with a map and compass. We will have three stations 1) Pace count with a game to learn how to follow a compass heading and reinforce your pace count. 2) You will learn how to make Ranger beads and how to use them. (please bring $5 to help with materials i.e. 550 cord, lighters, paper and ink for maps. pencils, and protractors). 3) And finally a real live man hunt. We plan to split up into 3 groups and then into smaller units to rotate through the stations spending an hour at each one. While at station two you will be able to cook and eat your dinner.

March Club Meeting
March 23
1800-2100
Glen Canyon Park
This month I have to change the date due to scheduling conflicts. So it
will be Saturday instead of Friday. And the topic will be how to make a
shelter with only one piece of cord a rectangle tarp and four stakes
that will cover you on 5 sides and allow you to have a fire that will
heat the shelter. These techniques are some old school methods that
have been lost on us who buy things already done for us. This will
change the items that you carry in you car and maybe even what you take
with you into the woods. As always bring a Foil Dinner, water, knife
and a friend. We will see you there. PS this is the closest I could
find to the tent that we will be constructing.

A Great Backpacking Stove
This is a Great Product that everyone should have!
I ran into Mikhail Merkurieff at the Rennaisance fair this last September in Provo Canyon where he told me about his stove. I did some looking into this and it is an amazing thing to have in your kit. I think that everyone should get one of these and put it into your go bag that your have with you at all times. You should watch this video.
PS I like his method for making omelets. Since I watched this I have used this method when I am out camping. You can have eggs without the shells.
